In the 1833, The City of Chicago was founded on the shores of Lake Michigan. Due to the strategic location of the area between the Chicago River, flowing into the Great Lakes and the Des Plaines River, flowing into the Mississippi, Chicago was an ideal location for the opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848. With the completion of the Galena and Chicago Railroad the same year, Chicago became the transportation hub of the the United States. It continued to be the largest rail hub in the world into the twentieth century and one of the busiest ports.

Today, with a population of almost 3 million, Chicago is the nation's third largest city, and attracts new residents from around the world. Thirteen percent of the city's population was born outside of the United States. Twenty-three percent of Illinois' population lives in the city of Chicago and another sixty-four percent in the counties of the Chicago metro area including Cook, Will, DuPage, Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties. Almost half of the state's population call Cook County home.

The Chicago metro area is the education and economic center of Illinois. The largest employers in the area are Wachovia Securities, Aramark Management Services and State Farm Insurance Compnay. Fortune 500 companies in the area include State farm Insurance Co., Boeing, and Seard Holding Corporation.  It is home to more than 50 universities and colleges and 14 Junior Colleges.

Chicago continues to be a a major transportation hub. O'Hare International Airport is one of the busiest in the world. Midway Airport also serves Chicago with over 19 million travelers a year. Chicago is a major hub for Amtrak service throughout the Midwest. It offers high-speed direct rail service to Carbondale, Quincy and St. Louis.

Often referred to as the "Windy City", Chicago originally adopted that name for its political climate and not its weather. The average temperature ranges from a high of 85 degrees in July to a low of 15 degrees in January.

The city is home to the world reknowned Brookfield Zoo, and Chicago Botanic Gardens. You can spend the afternoon at the Morton Arboretum, located 25 miles west, in the city of Lisle or visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in the Oak Park area. The kids will love visiting Six Flags Great America and Hurrican Harbor in Lake County or the new concept of family entertainment at the Arlington Racetrack. 

For an evening out, board one of the many riverboat casinos, including the Empress Casino Joliet, featuring 32 table games, a ballroom and 102-room hotel. Go shopping with the girls at the Gurnee Mills Mall or the Woodfield Mall, one of the largest malls in the U.S. For a little Chicago history, don't forget to visit the Long Grove Historic District featuring 80 shops and restaurants housed in preserved historic buildings and hosting the annual Chocolate Festival and Strawberry Fest. The Taste of Chicago in Grant Park, held every July, attracts millions of people to the largest free outdoor food festival.
